Termites cause about 5 billion dollars of catastrophic damage to homes in the United States every year. These insects consume wood 24/7 and termite queens can lay up to 30,000 eggs each day – it is important to catch them early. Most homeowners do not realize they have termite problems until the damage is done. It is recommended that you have your home inspected for termites at least once a year.

Even if your home does not have a wood exterior, termites can get through brick and vinyl and feed on the interior of your home: ceilings, floors, cabinets, and furniture. Signs of a termite infestation include:

  • Crumbling, damaged wood
  • Wood that sounds hollow when tapped
  • Hard to open windows or doors
  • Uneven, bubbling, or peeling paint
  • Squeaky floorboards
  • Frass (wood-colored droppings)
  • Swarmers (flying termites)
  • Moldy scent in home

If you notice more than one of these issues, you should schedule an inspection with JDC Pest Control to confirm the infestation. What should you expect and how should you prepare for a termite inspection?

To prepare for an inspection, you should make it easy to access the sinks in your home so the inspector can check your water sources for any signs of an infestation. There should be easy access to your attic or crawl space as well. Lastly, you should trim any plants that cover the exterior or foundation of your home.

You should expect the termite inspection to take at least 45 minutes, possibly longer. In the interior of your home, the baseboards, walls, windows, door frames, cabinets, and closets will be checked during the inspection. If you have a garage, attic, crawl space or basement, they will also be inspected. The most important areas that will be inspected are bathrooms, kitchens, and utility rooms. Lastly, exterior walls and eaves of the outside of your home will be inspected.

If an infestation is found, treatment will be recommended. If nothing is found, the inspector still may suggest a preventative treatment.
